Advantages of Watching Television

Nowadays, television is the most popular media of human modern life. Every house has at least one TV inside. TV has been playing a role in our daily life since it was invented in 1940s. Although more and more people think that TV just brings disadvantages to them, especially to children, it also has three main advantages. By watching TV, people can know everything happening around them, can learn different languages, and can also relax their minds.

The first and most important advantage is to get information. People usually watch TV to know what happening in their surrounding world, so they like to watch news. News is the information given by people working in broadcast stations. A news program always broadcasts both national and international news, so that people watching news on TV can increase their awareness of the world. For example, when someone watches CNN channel, he/she may know the candidates of the presidential election next year, or how many people have died or injured in Iraq war. Moreover, TV introduces current events. They are some special things or cultures which are going to happen in a country in the near future. When any event is coming up, TV has many advertisements about that holiday, such as which commodities will be on sale. It is a good information for customers. For instance, Christmas, the current event is coming up soon, there are lot of news and advertisements about this holiday on TV, so people know and go shopping to choose the best and cheapest things to prepare for their holiday. In addition, TV has news about other cultures in the world, like the New Year holiday in Eastern countries, such as China, Vietnam. It helps people who intend to travel know more about manners and customs in which countries they will arrive. Another information people can get when watching TV is weather. People usually watch the weather forecast before traveling or going outside their places. Some times they watch just this program to know about tomorrow’s weather, like the Santa Ana winds last month here, everyone felt uncomfortable and wanted to know when they stopped. By staying at home and watching TV, people can not only know but also see everything around the world, from news, events to weather.

The second advantage is to learn different languages. With the strong development of cable television, TV no longer limits the number of channels within a country or state, it can broadcast any channel in the world. That helps someone learn and practice different languages. When watching a foreign channel, it means that channel is not his/her native language channel, he/she may improve his/her listening skill, vocabularies, and may understand the way people talk in order to speak fluently. For instance, one learns English, and she wants to improve her English, so she usually watches TV shows. Certainly, she can learn some more slangs and vocabularies by listening to what people talking with each other. Maybe the first time she cannot understand at all, but after one or two months, her English will be surely better. Spending an amount of time everyday to watch TV is not wasteful at all, it helps language learners progress their studies.

The third advantage is to relax. Besides getting information and learning foreign languages, they watch TV just for fun. Most of TV shows are funny, such as soap opus on TV. When watching them, people will laugh a lot, and then they can drive away their stress after working hard all day. For example, the TV show “Friends” has been very popular until now although it was ended a couple years ago. People watched it throughout ten years because of its attractive plot. TV also has many channels for children. One of them is Disney Channel. It is a very famous channel for children. Moreover, TV also has gameshows. Some are interesting, some are useful. In addition, watching TV is a way to kill time. For example, a person has to wait for another person, and he has nothing to do, turning on the TV and watching is the best way. With the variety of channels on it, he can choose any channel he likes. Furthermore, cable television broadcasts 24/24, so viewers can watch every time they want. Watching TV is such a good way of relaxing someone’s mind.

In conclusion, TV has its own advantages. Although being replaced by computers and Internet, TV still is the best choice for everyone in the everywhere to get indispensable information, to help learning foreign languages and to relax.

Journal Entry # 33

What are you going to do over the 3 day weekend?

On this long weekend, I'm going to go to Santa Barbara on Sunday and back on Monday morning. I've been there one time but at that time, I was a little girl, so I almost forgot everything about that place. My friend living there told me many times about Santa Barbara. She said that is such a wonderful place to visit. I'm also gonna go to Solvang. That place is a Danish town. I am too excited to see a little Denmark there. Up to now, I've seen windmills on TV or on the internet, so I wonder how they are. I hope I have a lot of experience there and Santa Barbara is a good choice for this long weekend.

Thanksgiving is coming up soon. What three things are you most thankful for?

Thanksgiving is one of the big holidays in the U.S. After Halloween, Thanksgiving is also my new holiday here. It is coming up. I have many things which I am most thankful for, but there are three main things. Firstly, I want to thank for my parents. When I was a child, I used to be naughty and didn't listen to my parents much. Now, I repent for having been so mischievous. They bore me and gave me a healthy body. Moreover, whenever I live here, they have to work harder than ever to earn money to pay for my tuition fee. I appreciate that very much. Secondly, I want to send my thankfulness to my brother and other roomates who live with us. He came here earlier than me, and now he knows a lot of things here. I have been told everything about American lives, schools, people, etc. He also helped me do any necessary matters. He works and pays for my expenses here. We and other roomates live as a family. That's why I am not homesick too much. I feel more comfortable when living here. I think I am so lucky. Finally, I want to thank for all of my teachers both in Vietnam and in the U.S. Although some teachers I don't like, but I can't help thinking about what I have been given. Most of my awareness are from my teachers. I always respect them. In conclusion, I really want to send my thankfulness to three important things making my life now.

Is it ever okay to lie? In which circumstances?

Lying is not always bad, sometimes, it is okay. First, lies to make one happy. For example, you are doing homework, your friend calls you, and she says she is very depressed and needs someone to talk with her. When she asks you whether you are busy or not, you reply that you are not busy, but in fact, you have much homework to solve. You are telling a lie, but your lie is not bad, it helps her a lot. Second, lies to help yourself. You can avoid having problems. It doesn't mean you hurt other people. For instance, when you come to class late, you tell your teacher thousands of reasons why being late such as: traffice jam, alarm doesn't work, etc. Sometimes your teacher may trust you, and then, you get out of trouble. Telling lies is good or bad depends on you. To sum up, you should tell lies in approriate circumstances.

Does it matter what strangers think of you? Do you care if everyone likes you or are you content just being yourself? Write a paragraph explaining your answer.

For me, it doesn't matter what strangers think of me. I don't want to change whenever I meet strangers or I have to change to please them. It seems artificial. I like being myself. Of course I always listen to what people think or complain about me and give me advice. Anyway, I think if I live kindly, honestly with others, I don't have to worry or care what people think about me. They can think or say whatever they want, those are their rights. To sum up, I don't care what strangers think of me, I just want to live a life which is correct and comfortable.

Please post your pictures from the ALP Halloween party. Summarize the night and tell me what I missed!
On last Saturday, ALP students and I had a wonderful Halloween party. I came late that night. When I arrived, there were a lot of people inside. I had no idea about costumes, so I just wore casual clothes, and I worried about that. When my friend told me that some people didn't have costumes like me, I felt better. Then I got inside the pub. A lot of students were there, but the pub was so small. I saw my classmates and other friends, some wore impressive costumes and some just made up their faces. Most of them were so impressive, especially Carol, I was surprised when looking at her face. I also saw many ALP teachers. The DJ had good music. At first, he played dance music. After that, he changed into hip-hop. We danced and took pictures constantly. Every one looked so excited. Now I know new things about Halloween. If I was invited to any Halloween party next year, I would dress up to make it more interesting.

A Dancer

One full moon night in the rainy season, a man who lived in an apartment on the 13th floor felt alone and bored. His apartment had lost electricity because of the thunderstorm. Therefore, he held a candle in his hand and then put it on the table. Suddenly, the window was opened by the wind. Then he tried to close the window. At that moment, he looked at the opposite building, and he saw a woman who was dancing. However, he couldn’t see her clearly because there was the heavy rain. Strangely, he didn’t see her again until the next full moon, and she was still dancing. She wore a white dress, and she danced like a butterfly. He fell in love with her and really wanted to meet her. In the next morning, he went to her apartment, but no one answered the door. Next time when he saw her in full moon night again, he ran to her apartment immediately. He knocked on the door, and he waited for her. A few minutes later, he knocked again, and the door opened slowly. He went inside slowly and saw a dirty room with old furniture and many spider webs. The room smelled disgusting. When he walked into the room where she was dancing, he couldn’t believe his eyes. There was an empty room except for a noose swinging back and forth by the wind.

I am going to Las Vegas this weekend. If you were going to Las Vegas, where would you go and what would you do? Lastly, do you have any suggestions on how I can win a lot of money? Which games do you like to play?

Las Vegas is such a beautiful place to visit. I have been there two times. That's why I won't go to Las Vegas with ALP next month. But if I went, I would visit the hotels there. Every hotel has its own architecture, very specific and magnificent. For example, Lexor has a pyramidal in shape while Excalibur looks like a huge castle. I would like to walk and take pictures at all hotels in Las Vegas. They are so beautiful. In Las Vegas, I could also see Eiffel tower or Statue of Liberty as I were visiting Paris or New York. Casinos in Las Vegas are unmissed places when visiting Las Vegas. However, I am not over 21 so that I can't play in any casino. Also, I don't like spending money on playing at casinos. It is so wasteful. We should save money to do other things which are more necessary.

Compare and contrast two sports.

The Differences Between Table tennis and Tennis

Although tennis and table tennis are sports in which two or four people hit a ball back and forth to each other, there are quite a few differences. The first difference is the equipment. Players have rackets in table tennis while stringed rackets is used in tennis. Table tennis games take place on a table divided by a net whereas tennis is played on a rectangular, flat surface, usually grass or a hard court. The ball used in table tennis is very small, about 2 – 3 gram, made of plastic, and colored white or orange. Tennis, however, requires a rubber ball. The second difference between table tennis and tennis is the rules of the games. In table tennis, players allow a ball played towards them only one bounce on their sides of the table and return it so that it bounces on the opponent's side. Any hitting of the ball must be done such that the ball passes over the net. If the ball is strucked such that it travels around the net, but still lands on the opponent's side of the table, the hit is recognizable and the play is continued. If the opponent cannot return it over the net and make it bounce on your side, then you win the point. The players have to have quick reactions. In a tennis game, there are many rules. One player starts behind his baseline, between the center mark and the sideline. The receiver may start anywhere on their side of the net. When the receiver is ready, the opponent will serve, the receiver must play according to the speed of the opponent. Table tennis now is one of the favorite sports in Asian countries, especially in China. Also, tennis has attracted millions of people around the world in various tournaments such as Wimbledon in Europe.

Two Major Fast Food Restaurants

Although In - N - Out and McDonald are popular fast food restaurants, there are a few differences. One difference is the starting of these restaurants. McDonald was found in 1940, earlier than In-N-Out in 1948. Both of them were found in California and became very popular until now. The second one is the variety of food. In McDonald, there is many kinds of food such as hamburgers, chicken products, french fries, etc while In-N-Out just has 3 types of burgers as hamburger, cheese burger, double burger and french fries. The third one is the economic strategies. McDonald has many franchises around the world. In-N-Out also has many franchises but not around the world, it only reserves for Californians. Describe your most embarrassing moment. One paragraph. Use descriptive language.

My most embarrassing moment

When I was in middle school, at the closing ceremony to finish the school year, I was given a reward for working hard whole year. I was very excited because my efforts were requited meritoriously. First, I wore my school uniform neatly and I went to school. Many pupils were there. They looked happy because their summer was coming. Then the ceremony was started. I lined up with my friends who also were given the rewards like me and waited for the MC called our names. When the MC called my name, I went to stand in front of many pupils. After receiving the reward, I came back to the place where my classmates sat. Unfortunately, when I went up the platform, I was tripped over a step. I thought that I would fall down and I tried to hold the flap of my friend who walked before me. Unfortunately again, I couldn't balance cause my friend walked so fast and... I fall down. I looked like a frog in front of many people. Everyone looked at me in a few seconds and then, they laughed at me. I did never know that it could happen to me. I stood up and tried to find somewhere to hide their laughter. I can't forget until now. I think this is the most embarrassing moment.

Research Halloween online and write a paragraph summarizing the holiday.

Halloween is annual holiday which is celebrated on the night of October 31. There are many activities in this holiday include: trick-or-treating, watching horror films, visiting haunted houses, etc. The term “Halloween” is shortened from “All-hallows-eve”. Halloween is very popular in most of Western countries such as: the United States, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada, Puerto Rico and sometimes in Australia and New Zealand. This holiday was started by “The Celtic Festival of Samhain” of Celts who lived in Ireland and northern France many many years ago. They hold this festival to comemorate and glory Saint Samhain on Oct 31 (with Celts, at the beginning of November was also the beginning of the new year) because he administered the dead people’ souls. In nineteenth century, Irishes and Scottishes immigrated to America and brought the version of this holiday to here. Trick-or-treating is one of main activities in Halloween. Children in this night usually wear special costumes and masks, then they come to houses arround the place they live and ask for candies with a question “Trick-or-treat?”. This term means if the host don’t give them candies, they will do bad things so that most of people give them candies or cookies. The symbol of Halloween holiday is “Jack-O’-Lantern” which is carved from pumpkin. According to Irish legends, “Jack” was a name of the Irish guy and, when he died, he couldn’t go to the heaven or go to the hell because he was so mean and ridiculed devils and tempters. Finally, he had to wandered on the streets with a lantern. Nowadays, Halloween is one of the big and special holidays of the year, especially with children.

Write about your experience at Universal Studios! (please post pictures too)

I have been in Universal Studios 3 times so I had much experience there. Last month was the last time I visited it. It is very very large. I took more than 5 hours to visit all of the studios. The big experience in Universal was about the Van Helsing ( now the name has been changed but I forgot the new name). It was such a horrible place. I just went a half and I exited. I was frightened so I couldn't go through it. Then I relaxed by watching the Shrek 4D. I have seen it many times before but I still wanted to see again. It was interesting and I thought that I was in Shrek's advanture. When I went outside, I took a picture with Shrek, Fiona and Donkey. They were so cute. After that, I took the Studio's tour. I thought this is the best in Universal. It was always crowed, I had to get line and wait more than 30 minutes. I was traveled around the studios and known about where the movies were made. It was very beautiful and imposing. I remembered 2 years ago, when I saw the movie named King Kong, I admired Peter Jackson very much and I thought this movie was made at an island. And when I took this tour, I realized that the movie just was made at the studio. I was very amazed and wondered how could they do that? Next, I visited the Jurassic Park, wow, the dinosaurs looked like real. They were very big. I got wet but the hot weather warmed me. Then I took the Mummy ride. It was quite scary. The last show I saw was Water World. I thought that I was seeing a real movie. It was lively. Many people got wet cause they sat near the pool. All of these experience are unforgetable in my mind. Someday I would visit it again.

It is called "meet the bride and bring her home". Both of the bride and groom wear "Ao dai", it is Vietnamese tranditional custom. They include betel and areca, five fruits (bananas, oranges, kumquats, finger citrons), wine and jewelries for the bride. Next, the groom's mother wear the jewelries for the bride. And the groom and the bride give the rings to each other. Since then, they become husband and wife. Most of Vietnameses hold theses ceremonied at home more than in a church. In the evening, the couple has a wedding party at a restaurant with 2 familes, relatives, friends, colleagues. Someone will be a MC and annouce about this event. Today, I was selected as a possible juror (someone who performs jury duty). However, the court decided that they already had enough jurors. Part of me wishes that I could have participated in the case to see what it is like in the courtroom. However, part of me is glad that I don't have to miss class (because of my wonderful students and also the money).
In America, the legal system includes lawyers, judges, and jurors. How does the legal system work in your country? Who decides whether a person is innocent or guilty?

In Vietnam, the legal system also includes lawyers, judges, and jurors. When a court is opened, there are many people in the room include lawyers, judges, jurors, public prosecutors, plaintiff and defendant, their lawyers, witnesses. The lawyer from the plaintiff side mentions the offences of the other side and the lawyer from the defendant defend the accused. The lawyers have the responsibilities to defend their customers. Juror is a member of jury and jury is a group of people in a court of law who listen to the facts about a crime and decide if sombody if innocent or guilty. After that, the jury gives the verdict to the public prosecutors (usually have 2 people). Then the public prosecutors read that verdict. A judge is a person who listens all of what people say in a court and gives the final decisions. On the other hand, a judge is a person who has a supreme power and decides somebody is innocent or guilty.

What is a friend? Please write one paragraph using three main points/ideas.

FRIENDS

Everybody has at least one friend. So what is a friend? In my opinion, a friend is a person who can share with me everything. First, this friend is open-minded because when my friend is open-minded, she always wants to talk, to share her feelings with me and she also wants me to do that. So that I can tell her my secrets, my problems, my difficulties and she will help me to solve them. And sometimes she gives me a good advice. I really appreciate it. The second thing is honest. She and I are friends so we have to be honest, if I don't like her at this point, I will give her an advice or offer a suggestion. When she makes mistake, I will tell her and want her to regret and hope she won't do that again. I like to be perfectly straight in her dealings and of course, she have to do that if she is my friend. Honest helps you and your friends more understandable. I will never tell her a lie just to make her happy except it is not important or it's just a joke. Being a friend that means you have responsibility to make much progress in each other and in this friendship. The last but not least is believable. I especially a person who has this characteristic so I will appreciate if my friend has it. I have my own secrets so I want to tell my friend and want her to share with me. Something I can't tell my family so telling to a friend is a good way. Sometimes I tell my friend but she can't help me but she keeps my secret, with me it is enough. Because when she keeps my secret, it means she helps me a lot and I feel I am shared. That's why believable is one my main ideas. In general, according to me, a friend is a person who is open-mined, honest and believable.

Tell me about your dream vacation. Where would you like to go and why? What sort of things would you like to see and do?

MY DREAM VACATION

I really like traveling. And my dream vacation is to travel to Europe. Until now, I've just traveled to Europe by watching movies, pictures or on the Internet. I love the countries in Europe such as U.K, France, Germany, Italy... The reason I love the countries there is because of their antique sceneries. There are many castles, forts which are very old and also superb. For example, in U.K,they have the House of Parliament; in France they have Effiel tower and the Lourve Museum which has "Mona Lisa" (Leonardo da Vinci)... Most of them are very famous and attractive tourists. But if I visited one country in Europe, I would choose Italy. In Italy there are many beautiful cities like Rome, Milan... I would like to see the Pisa tower, the Colosseum - one of the new seven wonders in the world and the famous fashion city - Milan. I would like to enjoy the Italian food like pizza, pasta. In general, Europe is such an antique and beautiful place to travel. I like Europe and always want to travel there somedays.

Are you going to the Concert Under the Stars? Are you going on the Los Angeles City Tour? I hope you go to at least one of these events. First, attend the event. Next, write a paragraph summarizing your experience. If you do not attend either event, please write about what you did over the weekend. I am so sorry because I didn't go to the Concert.

On Friday, my friends and I intended to go to the Concert but when I came back home, my brother said that we had to pick up our cousin at the airport. She would come here that night. I forgot about it. So I had to go with my brother and when I came back, I just saw the firework. Luckily, my apartment very close to CSUF so I could see the firework. It was so beautiful. Anyway, it was also my consolation for not going to the Concert. I heard that it was very exciting and the music was so wonderful. Sorry again, I didn't go on the L.A City Tour. On Saturday, my cousin, my brother and I went to San Diego and visited our friends. San Diego was such a beautiful place. It was cooler than Fullerton and the beach is really, really beautiful. My cousin has just come from Vietnam and she just stayed here this weekend because she has to go to San Francisco and study there. We didn't have a lot of time so we just visited San Diego. On the way came back home, we went to Little Saigon and had dinner in a Vietnamese Restaurant. My weekend was not bad but anyway, so sorry cause I missed the 50th Anniversary of CSUF.

Write a narrative paragraph about an unforgettable experience in your life. This could be an earthquake like in the story on page 24 or it could be something different like your first dating experience. Be sure to use time order signals

MY UNFORGETABLE EXPERIENCE

When I was in high school (in Vietnam), I like to go to my friends' houses and study with them. One day, after studying, I came back home. It rained a little bit outside and I decided to go immediately before it rained a lot. And I didn't have a raincoat. On the way came back home, it rained was more and more heavy with strong wind and thunder. Unfortunately, I fell down because the roads were so slippery. I felt so bad, I try to call my family but I recognised that I forgot my cell phone at home so I didn't know how to contact with my family. After a few minutes, I tried to keep calm. At first, I looked for my bicycle and lucky me, it was not broken down. There was few people outside and everyone tried to go as fast as they could. The rain was still heavy and the thunder was so louder. I felt cold and very fearful. After that, I found somewhere to shelter from the rain. I waited there about 30 minutes. When the rain seemed to stop, I continued to go home. Unfortunately again, it was suddenly rained again. Of course, with winds and thunders. Then I decided to keep going. I just really wanted to stay at home. Finally, I could go home safely after 2 hours finding way to go back. It was really really bad. I won't forget it. I was such a terrible night. With me, it is an first unforgetable experience in my life.

Journal Entry # 5

What is your favorite season? Write a paragraph.
In 4 seasons in a year, winter is my favorite season. The weather in winter is very cold, and my friends said that I was crazy cause I like the cold weather. In Vietnam, and especially in Hochiminh City, winter is not specific. It's just cooler than other seasons. So it is so different between winter in Vietnam and in the U.S. But there would be a lot of fun if snow fell in California. And in winter we have Chirstmas Holiday. This is my important reason explaining why I like winter. I'm very excited about this holiday in the U.S. I will have a big holiday to celebrate Chirstmas and New Year. So I can visit my friends,my family who also live in the U.S in this holiday. It will such a happy time for me to enjoy the first winter abroad.

Write about a person who has made a difference.

Bill Gates

A person who has made a great difference is Bill Gates. I think everyone who uses a computer also knows about Bill Gates. He's been intelligent since he was a child. When he became adult, he and his friends established a company which is very famous now and known as Microsoft. Most people in the world use the Microsoft System for their computers. I also consider this as a big innovation in computer field. The system has a great benefit to people who use it. Bill has dedicated almost his life to computer science. Besides, he and his wife have the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and use this to help the poor people all over the world the world.
